[Design Portfolio Spotting] Bevk Perović Arhitekti

The Slovenian architecture firm Bevk Perović Arhitekti has a splendid and minimal online showcase of their work. While I assumed that only the finished product would be shown, I was pleased to discover that sketches were also inserted as part of this sequence of the “house HB” project:









For other projects, physical models or prototypes were shown amongst the photographs of the end-result. It’s wonderful to see a smidgen of rough sketches to complement the polished images. They fill in the details and “color” of a project’s story, from its inception to completion. Like their radiant vision of architecture, Bevk Perović Arhitekti’s online presentation is also designed with a less-opaque approach.

[Design Portfolio Spotting] Jussi Gamache of Freezepop

This Design Portfolio Spotting post came with a bonus: An addition to my list of music appreciation for the Boston-based synth-pop band Freezepop. You may have heard of them via video games. The lead vocalist is Liz Enthusiasm, the pseudonym of Justinne (“Jussi”) Gamache who, much to my delight, is a graphic designer.

Her online portfolio is simple and compact. One-screen sites (as reported by 37signals and Web Designer Wall) are admirable. Jussi’s portfolio requires no scrolling—a trend I thought had passed in web design—so it was refreshing to see it here.

The contour of the collage-esque shape housing her content adds a contrast of texture and edge, especially the ripped notebook form. At the same time, this technique visually chunks the content with a spot for the navigation, caption and lightbox area (without being lightboxed, no relation to Rick-rolled). The end result showcases the design work, all resting on one screen, without leaving it.

Jussi’s online design portfolio makes for “frozen music” (pun intended).

[Design Portfolio Spotting] Dialect

In the straightforward, grayscale spirit of Giovanni Jubert’s online portfolio, I spotted the work of web marketing agency Dialect based in Vancouver Island, Canada. Viewing their home screen, I appreciated their upfront honesty in calling themselves a small business. After all, “small” shouldn’t be considered a pejorative term; a business’s success isn’t strictly tied to its size.

Small can mean lean. With this in mind, the success found in Dialect’s Case Studies is described in a succinct and clear way—qualities shared by the interface’s simple two-column grid. The dominance of black text and generous white margins makes for comfortable reading, and accentuates the color of the screen details of their client web work.
