[Nifty Idea] Open Design Critiques and Work Travelogs

White Whale Web Services, Oakland, CA, create blogs for clients and their constituencies to publicly comment on the firm’s work in progress—such as their redesign of Southwestern University, including Kenyon College and Haverford College. White Whale also writes and publishes a Business Travel Diary for more behind-the-scenes views on their work activities. As Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV said at this year’s Seed Conference, “Talk about stuff—what you do for work, that your crap looked weird yesterday. Everything’s going to be out there, you won’t be able to hide anything, so embrace it.” White Whale is one of many firms that embrace defrosting design work by sharing the decisions behind it.

Designer’s Quest(ionnaire): Lincoln Kayiwa of Kayiwa


The Designer’s Quest(ionnaire) is a Design Feast initiative embracing the perspective of a designer in a succinct format. Lincoln Kayiwa founded his design company Kayiwa, “an epitome of novelty, aesthetics, functionality and environmental friendliness.” Inspired by the toucan bird’s bill, he designed the sterling silver Tukanni (above), an interpretation of the conventional chopsticks.
